What is menopause?
Menopause is the natural cessation, or stopping, of a woman’s menstrual cycle that typically occurs between the ages of 45 and 55. It includes several physiologically complex and metabolically dynamic stages. Symptoms associated with menopause include mood changes, disturbed sleep patterns, hot flashes, and sweating.
What is a phytoestrogen?
Phytoestrogens, also referred to as “dietary estrogens” are estrogen-like substances derived from plants. They are structurally similar to estrogen produced by the ovaries (17β-estradiol) and can bind to estrogen receptors in the body. The body treats these dietary estrogens as though they were estrogen produced by the ovaries; however because phytoestrogens do not bind to estrogen receptors as firmly as 17β-estradiol, they can support hormonal balance without over-stimulating estrogen receptors.
How do phytoestrogens work?
Although the mechanisms remain to be clarified, some phytoestrogens (such as the genistein in this formula) are believed to emulate the effects of estrogen in metabolic pathways while other phytoestrogens (such as the black cohosh in this formula) are said to work through estrogenic and serotonergic pathways.
How do the ingredients in this product target symptoms associated with menopause?
Collectively, the ingredients in this formula support the maintenance of estrogen levels in forms that do not over-stimulate estrogen receptors. This helps reduce the variation in estrogen levels and the probability of related vasomotor symptoms (hot flashes, night sweats, chills). This formula also contains ashwagandha, an herbal adaptogen shown to reduce the perception of mental stress and help support a balanced mood.
What is 3,3’-Diindolylmethane and how does it contribute to this formula?
3,3’-Diindolylmethane, or DIM, is a compound that your body makes from a phytonutrient called indole-3-carbinol, which is typically found in cruciferous vegetables and known to support healthy estrogen metabolism. While DIM is naturally made in the body from certain vegetables such as brussels sprouts, studies have shown that it would take nearly a kilogram of freeze-dried brussel sprout powder to equal an amount of DIM typically found in just one or two capsules. Specific to Menopause Support, DIM consumption may result in decreased levels of some compounds while preserving the levels of others, thus improving the balance of estrogen activity.
What is ashwagandha, and where is it sourced from?
Ashwagandha is a medicinal herb that has been used in the Ayurvedic system of traditional Indian medicine for centuries. It is one of the most well researched adaptogens, with numerous studies suggesting it possesses anti-stress, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory properties. The biologically active components in ashwagandha are withanolides, a family of plant steroids found in the leaves and roots of the plant. Ashwagandha has been sourced from wild plants in India for thousands of years. Continuing in this tradition, the ashwagandha in Menopause Support is sourced from sustainably run farms in central India.
