MIC Gastrostomy Feeding Tubes are designed for patients requiring long-term enteral nutrition who cannot tolerate oral intake, have a low aspiration risk, or need gastric decompression or medication delivery directly into the stomach. These tubes may be placed surgically, percutaneously under fluoroscopic or endoscopic guidance, or used as a replacement when a mature stoma tract already exists.

Indications for Use

The Avanos MIC gastrostomy feeding tubes are intended for patients who require long-term enteral feeding, cannot tolerate oral intake, are at low risk for aspiration, or need gastric decompression or medication delivery directly into the stomach.

Contraindications

Contraindications include colonic interposition, ascites, portal hypertension, peritonitis, uncorrected coagulopathy, infection around the stoma site, and absence of an established tract for replacement.

Complications

Possible complications include nausea, vomiting, abdominal bloating, aspiration, skin breakdown, infection, hypergranulation tissue, tube clogging, leakage, balloon failure, and device dislodgement.

Placement

MIC gastrostomy feeding tubes may be placed surgically, percutaneously under fluoroscopic or endoscopic guidance, or as a replacement using an existing stoma tract.

Warning: Perform gastropexy to secure the stomach to the abdominal wall and identify the insertion site prior to tube insertion. Do not use the retention balloon for gastropexy.

Balloon Maintenance

Balloon life varies based on care and patient factors. Check balloon water volume weekly using sterile or distilled water only. Replace the tube if balloon leakage or rupture is detected.

Daily Care & Maintenance Check List

• Inspect stoma site and tube condition daily.
• Clean using warm water and mild soap; rinse and dry thoroughly.
• Rotate tube daily and ensure external bolster rests 1–2 mm above the skin.
• Flush regularly based on facility guidelines.
